Kansas City, MO - The St.
Michael’s Veterans Center has officially opened its doors for the first of
three planned phases. Developed through
a partnership between Catholic Charities of Kansas City – St. Joseph and Yarco
Co. and designed by Rosemann & Associates P.C., the 58-unit apartment
complex will help combat the homelessness of 57 individual men, and one family.
All of the apartments will be affordable.
Leading the design team was Rosemann’s Edward English. 
Edward’s plan includes spacious
wheelchair-accessible rooms, granite countertops and large closets. The building also has community rooms,
outpatient medical care, a fitness center, and computer and job training
The development transforms what
has been an eyesore for many years on the site of the former Holy Temple
Homes. The 24-acre property will host
three new buildings as well as updated landscaping. Phase II is slated to begin this fall and be
complete in early 2016.
Financing was primarily funded by
a U.S. Bank community development subsidiary which incorporated the use of
federal and state low-income tax credits as well as the use of federal
grants. The city contributed roughly
$1.2 million in order to grade the site and build a new road. Tax credits were awarded to the project by the
Missouri Housing Development Commission.
